How progressive lenses work

A progressive lens corrects presbyopia (the age-related loss of up-close focus that begins for most people in their mid-40s) using a gradually changing prescription from top to bottom. You look through the upper portion for distance (driving, watching TV), the middle for intermediate tasks (computer screens, dashboard gauges), and the lower portion for reading and close work. The transition between zones is a smooth, gradual blend, which is why progressives are also called "no-line bifocals."

The trade-off: progressives have a narrower field of clear vision in the intermediate and reading zones than dedicated single-vision glasses, and the outer edges of the lens have some soft-focus distortion. That's a physics limitation of all progressive designs.

Adjusting to your progressives

Your brain needs time to learn where to look through each part of the lens. A realistic timeline for most patients:

  1. Days 1-3. A gentle "swim" sensation when turning your head, and stairs may feel slightly different. Normal. Point your nose at what you want to see rather than moving just your eyes.
  2. Days 4-7. Most wearers find the swim fading. Reading and computer work feel more natural. You start moving your head instinctively to find the right zone.
  3. Weeks 2-4. Full adaptation. The lenses feel invisible. If discomfort persists past two weeks, come back for a fitting check. A small frame adjustment often makes a significant difference.
Tip. Wear your new progressives consistently during the first week. Switching back and forth between old and new glasses slows your brain's adaptation.

The coatings that finish our lens

Whatever lens design you choose, the coatings decide how it performs in real light. What each treatment does, and who benefits most.

Anti-reflective (AR). AR coating eliminates distracting reflections from the lens surfaces, letting 99.5% of light pass through compared to 92% without it. The visual difference is immediate: sharper contrast, reduced glare from oncoming headlights, clearer screen work, and a cleaner look that lets people see your eyes through the lens. We recommend AR on virtually every pair. It is the single highest-impact upgrade available.

Blue-light filtering. Blue-light lenses reduce the amount of high-energy visible (HEV) blue light reaching your eyes from screens and artificial lighting. Current research from the American Academy of Ophthalmology shows no evidence that screen light damages eyes, but many of our patients report reduced visual fatigue during long work sessions. If you spend six or more hours a day on screens, it's worth trying, and we give an honest assessment of whether it's likely to help based on your specific symptoms.

Photochromic (Transitions). Photochromic lenses darken automatically in sunlight and clear up indoors, replacing the need for a separate pair of prescription sunglasses. Modern formulations (Transitions Gen 8 and XTRActive) activate faster and get darker than earlier versions. They don't darken inside a car, because the windshield blocks the UV that triggers the change, so consider polarized prescription sunglasses as a companion pair for driving.

Scratch-resistant coating. Applied to both front and back surfaces, scratch-resistant coatings extend lens life significantly. No coating makes lenses scratch-proof, but modern hard coats withstand daily wear from cleaning, pocket storage, and minor impacts far better than uncoated lenses. Included standard on most lens packages at Voorthuis.

UV protection. Prolonged UV exposure contributes to cataracts and macular degeneration over time. Polycarbonate and Trivex block 100% of UV inherently; CR-39 and high-index lenses need a UV coating applied. Every lens that leaves Voorthuis includes full UV protection - we don't charge extra for it.

Anti-fog coating. Reduces condensation when moving between temperature extremes: stepping outside in winter, opening a dishwasher, or wearing a face covering. Useful for healthcare workers, kitchen professionals, and anyone tired of wiping their lenses every few minutes.

Bifocals remain a valid choice if you want a wider reading zone or have tried progressives and found the adaptation difficult. Voorthuis does not bill vision insurance panels, and we are direct about why. Those panels set short appointment windows and steer opticians toward a limited frame and lens list. Stepping outside them is exactly what lets us recommend what actually works best for your eyes and your day, whatever a plan happens to cover.

Lens pricing varies based on your prescription, material, lens design, and coatings. A general framework:

  • Single vision lenses

    Start in a range comparable to high-quality independent opticians. Material upgrades (high-index, Trivex) and coatings add to the base price.

  • Progressive lenses

    Cost more than single vision due to the surfacing technology required. Premium digital freeform progressives sit at the higher end.

  • Specialty lenses

    Computer, sports, occupational, and driving lenses are priced based on the design and material selected.

We provide a detailed quote before you commit, broken down by lens type, material, and each coating so you see exactly what you're paying for, with no bundled add-ons and no surprise line items.

We accept FSA and HSA for your lenses, take all major credit cards, and provide a fully itemized medical invoice you can submit to your plan for out-of-network reimbursement. Many patients are reimbursed for a meaningful share of the cost.

How long does it take to adjust to progressive lenses?
Most patients adapt within one to two weeks of consistent wear. The first few days may feel slightly disorienting as your brain learns to look through the correct zone for each distance. Wear your new progressives full-time during the first week to speed up adaptation. If discomfort persists past two weeks, visit any Voorthuis location for a complimentary fitting check. A small frame adjustment often resolves the issue.
Are progressive lenses worth the extra cost over bifocals?
For most patients, yes. Progressives provide intermediate vision (computer distance) that bifocals lack entirely, eliminate the visible line, and prevent the jarring image jump when your eyes cross the bifocal boundary. If you work on a computer, drive regularly, or prefer the look of a line-free lens, progressives deliver measurable daily value. Bifocals remain a solid choice if you primarily read and want the widest possible near zone.
Why do my progressive lenses feel blurry at the edges?
Peripheral soft-focus is inherent to progressive lens physics. The gradual power change across the surface creates unavoidable aberration at the outer edges. Higher-quality freeform progressive designs minimize this distortion by using your individual measurements to optimize the clear-vision corridor. If the blur extends into areas you look through frequently, the lenses may be misaligned or the wrong design for your prescription. Bring them to any Voorthuis location for an evaluation.
What's the difference between standard and premium progressive lenses?
Standard progressives use a conventional design that works well for most prescriptions. Premium progressives (Varilux, Zeiss Individual, Shamir Autograph) use digital freeform surfacing that accounts for your exact frame measurements, prescription, and wearing position. The result is a wider usable corridor, less peripheral distortion, and faster adaptation. The difference is most noticeable for higher add powers and patients who spend significant time on screens.
Is anti-reflective coating worth it on prescription lenses?
Anti-reflective coating lets 99.5% of light through your lenses compared to 92% without it. That improvement translates to noticeably sharper vision, reduced glare from headlights at night, less eye fatigue during screen work, and a cleaner cosmetic appearance. Modern AR coatings are also more durable and easier to clean than older formulations. We consider it the most impactful upgrade for any pair of lenses.
Do I need blue-light glasses for computer work?
The scientific evidence is nuanced. The American Academy of Ophthalmology states there's no evidence that screen light damages eyes. Many patients still report comfort improvements during extended screen sessions. We discuss your specific symptoms before recommending blue-light filtering, and we won't upsell you on a coating you're unlikely to notice. If digital eye strain is your main concern, proper progressive fitting and an anti-reflective coating often provide more relief than a blue-light filter alone.
How do I know which lens material is right for my prescription?
Material choice depends on prescription strength, frame style, and lifestyle. Low prescriptions work well in standard CR-39 plastic or Trivex. Moderate-to-strong prescriptions benefit from high-index materials (1.67 or 1.74) that reduce thickness and weight. Children and active adults should use polycarbonate or Trivex for impact resistance. Your optician evaluates all of these factors and shows you thickness comparisons before you decide.
Does Voorthuis accept vision insurance?
No. Voorthuis doesn't participate in vision insurance plans. This lets our opticians recommend the best lens for your needs without being limited to insurance-approved products and rushed appointment windows. We provide detailed invoices you can submit for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Many patients use FSA or HSA funds at Voorthuis, and we accept all major credit cards.
Can I get prescription lenses for my existing frames?
In most cases, yes. Bring your current frames to any Voorthuis location and we'll assess whether they can accept new lenses, checking for structural integrity, adequate lens height for progressives, and compatibility with your updated prescription. If the frames are in good condition and suitable, we're happy to fit new lenses into them.
How often should I update my prescription lenses?
We recommend a comprehensive eye exam every one to two years, or sooner if you notice vision changes. Lens coatings (especially anti-reflective) have a useful life of about two years before wear affects performance. If your prescription has changed, your current lenses are scratched, or coatings are degrading, it's time for a new pair. Regular updates also ensure your optometrist catches any eye-health changes early.
