In 1973, Albert Voorthuis opened the first Voorthuis Opticians on 1712 Eye St., NW in Washington, DC with a vision to change the way Washington sees eye care. With a focus on customer service, emphasis on superior quality and offering a greater choice in high-end eyewear as the foundation, Voorthuis went against the conventional wisdom of offering customers a limited number of frames from which to choose, and began offering hundreds of frames representing signature brands from around the world that, in some cases, had never been offered in the United States, let alone in Washington, DC.
As we've grown over the last 50 years, we have evolved from a one-location optical store to an eight location optometry and optical practice. Through it all, however, our vision and philosophy has remained unchanged.
We offer a comprehensive approach to eye care by performing eye and contact lens examinations by our highly qualified optometrists. Our opticians provide professional advice and individual care to ensure that patients receive the best-suited frames, lenses, and contact lenses to correct their vision and fit their lifestyle. We also work hard to service patients from local ophthalmologists and optometrists.
Voorthuis continues to be family run, with both of Albert’s daughters—Anna-marie and Dr. Rebecca Voorthuis, OD— overseeing the day-to-day operations with the same focus on customer and patient service, superior quality and providing the best selection of eyewear that Albert established in 1973.
